Is Star Trek Into Darkness Worth Seeing?

I have to warn you that this review is a bit biased.  I love Star Trek.  I am not a huge Trekkie that knows every detail and plot line, however.  I probably would but I do not have time for that.  I have watched all of the Star Trek television series and all of the movies.  When I heard that Star Trek Into Darkness was coming out, I could not wait to see it.

I finally saw this movie last night.  I enjoyed watching it.  It was funny, clever and suspenseful.  I will probably go and see it again within the week.  I did have a few issues with the plot and the details, however.  There were a few glaring problems that I saw.

While I do realize that this is Abram's Star Trek, I do think that Rodenberry would be rolling in his grave.   I am not sure that he would have liked the plot changes that have been made.  Understanding that the timeline has been changed, some of these changes could possibly make sense.  I do not think some are necessary, though.

My biggest issue is the Spock/Uhura relationship. I think that it is a neat idea but when it causes Spock not to be true to his character, I have problems with that.  He shows too much emotion in this movie for my taste.  Also, the crying scene with Captain Kirk was a little over the top.

The other issue was with the cursing.  By this time, humans have eliminated most cursing from their vernacular.  This is pointed out in Star Trek IV when they go back in time and hear people cursing.  Spock didn't even know what it was.  When Kirk explained it to him, Spock tried, very badly, to curse himself.  This film had a lot of unnecessary cursing.

Overall, it is a fun film to watch.  If you can watch it without comparing it to the original plot and cast, it would be even better.  Also, throw out any physics lessons you have been taught because many scenes defy gravity and any other physics laws that are known to man.  When viewed as a fun, science fiction movie, it is a good flick.  I recommend watching it, especially in the theater. The action scenes look amazing on the big screen.
